Abstract

This study aims to show the efforts of Muslims and Christians living in the provinces of eastern Crete to arrange their affairs in the kadı court of Kandiye. Men and women did not hesitate to travel from their village to the city and appeal to the Ottoman judge, from whom they expected an advantageous solution to their problem. Christians and Muslims men and women came to the kadı court to record their marriage contract or divorce, the purchase or sale of their estate, and to arrange disputes arising from the violation of their personal rights, as well as their hereditary and property rights. They also recorded in the Ottoman court their conversion to Islam, as well as any matters that concerned them.
